My name is Josephine Wilson (formerly Josephine (Jo) Fenwick)
I trained in Liverpool at Royal Southern and Myrtle Street Children’s Hospitals between Jan 1974 and July 1977 and would love to reconnect with anyone who may remember me. Many of our set worked at ‘The Royal’
Is there any organisation like this which covers these now demolished hospitals?
Although I now live in New Zealand I would love to attend a reunion at some point.
Thank you so much for your help.
    Kind regards,

  18. Obituary: Pam Thurnhill (née Bingham) PTS Aug.1959

On 7th January 2019 Pamela (Pam) Thurnhill died aged 77 years. Her funeral took place at St. Peter’s Parish Church, Heversham, Cumbria. Pam is survived by her children, Anna and Karl, and grandchildren, Sebastian and Antoine.
After qualifying at the Royal, Pam worked as a nurse in Kendal Hospital before becoming a practice nurse for 30 years in Didsbury, South Manchester.
For 60 years she remained great friends with nurses from her student days: Pat Holmes (née Rourke), Myra Herbert, Jean Hafez (née Thomas), Blod Davis and Sylvia Norcott (née Morris). She enjoyed attending many nurses’ reunions in Liverpool.

  28. End of an era

So sad that I have only just found the nurses league and am witness to its demise. Would have loved to have caught up with some of the girls in my set but it wasn’t meant to be. I called into the hospital last year but obviously couldn’t go round it . I just saw the G P surgery. So pleased most of the hospital is still standing and being looked after. It’s been great looking at people’s photos. I remember those corridors, the round wards , the Florence Nightingale wards. Anyone remember the operating theatre with a viewing room? I also remembered where my room was on the top floor of the nursing home and how difficult t was for me to get used to the sound of all the traffic outside as I tried to sleep . All fond memories of my student days .

Lovely to receive the last news letter from the League, but so sad to read of the death of one of my dear friends,Wendy Landry so sorry I did not know when, otherwise I would have written a small tribute to her, for she did serve as the assistant Treasure with me on the committee, and helped to get all the membership records computerised, also going back through the Finacial Records(together with Jo Humphries) to claim back monies to enable the Bursery to be created in 2000 with the University no small task I assure you.

    Hello,

My name is Laura Dawson and I am a research administrator for NIHR CRN North West Coast. We are part of the NHS responsible for clinical trials. I recently attended an event for the NHS 70 yrs birthday and spoke to someone there (possibly Margaret Draycott). We are currently compiling images for our Impact Report and would like to know if we have permission to use images from your repository in our Report. The lady I spoke to said it wouldn’t be a problem but I wanted to check again just in case there are any copyright restrictions we need to be aware of.

    Thank you for your time

Dear Susie, sorry for my late, very late reply . I was hoping to join you all for the last time in October. We won’t be coming to visit UK after all this year.
I am sure you will have a wonderful time together. It has been a real shame that I have been unable to contact any of my PTS set( Jan 1971 ). However I only came across the League by accident a year ago. What a lot of time wasted . It’s a great shame the site is closing down, truly the end of an era .

  43. 50 year reunion 2019

    Hello Sept 1969 PTS!
Beth Gornall (nee Harman) and I, Pat Gornall (nee Milbourn) were wondering if there will be a 50 year reunion for our PTS? Having never visited this site before, I’m posting randomly! Here’s hoping…

Pat (Milbourn) Gornall July 16, 2018 at 8:00 am #
  44. Hi Pat. I’m afraid the league is being wound up in October. There is still enthusiasm amongst members to reunite on the third Saturday in October 2019 for afternoon tea. As it stands this will be arranged by the Foresight Centre so you will have to book directly with them. We will give full details in January on the website before we shut that down for messages. If you decided to have an independent reunion you can book that through the Foresight Centre privately at any time of the year. During the weekday they can organise a free tour of the old building, Saturdays you have to pay for someone to come in especially. There are no original wards left un refurbished as they are all offices or teaching suites but you can see the chapel.I hope this helps and that you enjoy a get together

Sadly, I have heard today of the death of Miss Elspeth Yule.
I’m sure you will all remember as I do, what a wonderful Night Superintendent she was at LRI, so calm and supportive to both patients and staff, we always felt we were in safe hands when she was on duty.
She spent the latter years of her life in the Tithebarn Nursing Home in Crosby enjoying days out with other residents, and managing to keep in touch with several of her old friends.
Her funeral is on 30th May at 12.30 at the United Reform Church in Moor Lane Crosby.

  56. Update on 2018 Reunion
We have been inundated with requests to attend the reunion. The Committee wishes to stress that it will be possible to continue our reunions at the Foresight Centre in the future as they are happy to take bookings for an afternoon tea. This would also apply if individual groups wanted to meet up at any other times of the year. We already have a waiting list of members whose applications were unsuccessful so it is highly unlikely that any non members will be able to be accommodated. This is strictly governed by the number of people allowed in the space by the Centre.
We emphasise that it is only the formal organisational structure which includes the Committee, financial and membership arrangements which will cease.

If you are unable to attend PLEASE let us know as soon as you can so that someone on the waiting list can take your place.Sue Butterworth is doing a sterling job under difficult circumstances so please be patient.

Applications for the 45 places on the three Saturday morning tours will be in the newsletter and we would urge members who have done previous tours to be generous and let others take the places. There are no original wards to be seen anymore as all are converted into office or teaching spaces. Anyone who wishes to take a tour anytime of the year during the weekday can arrange that directly with the Foresight Centre free of charge. We only have to charge because someone comes in especially on a Saturday. I hope this clarifies the arrangements so far.

  57. Sad news

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Mrs Dorothy Williams nee Jones ct 1957.
Dot was a staunch supporter of the Nurses’ League, serving on the committee as Journal Editior for several years, and also organising the annual Welsh reunion at Port Meirion until 2015. That year she suffered a stroke which meant that she lost her speech, and subsequently Dot and her husband moved into a nursing home.
She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends who knew her in Wales and through the League.

  68. Topical Press Agency Medical Collection

Hello. My name is Gary Winter and I am Exhibitions and Images Officer at Historic England.

The Historic England Archive has recently discovered a collection of over 4,000 photographs taken by the Topical Press Association. Dating from 1938 to 1943, the photographs document medicine and health care in England shortly before and during the Second World War, and immediately prior to the foundation of the National Health Service. The photographs document medical procedures, equipment, wartime hospital wards, evacuated children, patients and staff.

Photographs of Liverpool Royal Infirmary feature in the collection.

The Historic England Archive is currently undertaking a project to preserve, catalogue and digitise the collection. The resulting catalogue and digital images will be made available to users online through the Historic England Archive website. The completion of this project will coincide with this year’s 70th anniversary of the founding of the NHS.

Historic England would like to track down people who may have stories to tell about working in health before the founding of the NHS or during its formative years, with the aim of recording interviews about their experiences. Ideally, we would like to make contact with people who may have worked at the hospitals that feature in our Topical Press Agency Medical Collection.

If you would be interested in assisting with our project, please email gary.winter@historicengland.org.uk

    Thank you very much indeed.

    Yours sincerely,

    Gary

  69. Hi Gary. Thank you for your email on what sounds like an absolutely fabulous project. Our Nurses League was started in 1933 and some of our older members have vivid memories of working in the NHS early days. I will circulate the information as best I can and hope you get a response.Perhaps it would be good to contact the Liverpool Medical Institute as many of their members also will have worked at the Royal. https://www.lmi.org.uk
I really look forward to publication of your project and wish you every good luck.Susie Overill

  89. Susan Carruthers catch up

Hi Susan, so sorry it’s been so long, but as you say time flies. The husband has been off work with a back injury for four months n my life turned around a bit !
As for our holiday and meeting up. I have given you our dates, but you would always be welcome to see n stay with us in Kessingland. We hire a caravan and there is always plenty of room. It’s on the coast. You would be most welcome. We are on fb as hevnkev, my email hcjonsberg@googlemail.com.
Landline 0061 7 54979219. Don’t know what mobile number is as yet for when we are in uk.
We will also be staying at Leasowe castle for a couple of days, hoping to pop over to the pool.
I am no longer nursing, retired 7 years ago but that was because I emigrated. . Two weeks before my flight I got a letter from NSW nursing board stating that they couldn’t go further with my application until they received results from my ELTS! ! What! I looked ELTS up , have you heard of it ? It meant a course , then an exam. To prove that I communicated effectively with graduates , their words. I did book myself in, bought the books. Then thought, you know I don’t have to prove myself to anybody. Wasn’t about nursing , just English .
They have now stopped it, it is a money spinner. I could understand if I wasn’t English speaking.
But good for you. You found your niche. I have a hearing prob these days so I don’t want to be a liability . Plus you appear stupid.
So we leave 30 November, not long now. We are in London for 3 days. Then up to Liverpool for another 3 days. I do hope we can catch up one way or another. We can come to Reading from Norwich. Not a long trip. By train prob instead of driving. Aw looking forward to this……Heather xxxxx

I trained at Broadgreen Hospital in 1974 as a pupil nurse, I started my training in the November and I loved every minute of it. I remember colleagues such as Jan Malley, Jane Winterbottom, Marie Daley, to name but a few. I often think about my training and the girls in the class.

You did have to train at the Royal Infirmary for at least part of your training to be in the League but we are closing down the membership in 2018 so it will come to an end then. Hi Susan Carruthers ,
Am not so tech savvy, but great to see your post. I forgot to look earlier. We arrive merseyside 4th December. Leave 7th for York for two days. We then make our way to East Anglia where I lived for 30 years beforehand emmigrating. So most of my family and friends are there now. .I wanted to have an English Xmas .
You have led an interesting working life, Now I look back, I am not surprised.
No wonder you have loved it. My experience in theatres as a student nurse left me terrified of theatre work….all those egos ! However I was poached from the wards by a canny Recovery Sister, she was a Mancunian so we hit it off very well. And Recovery is still one of my favourite workplaces.
We will be staying in Kessingland for most of our uk stay, on the coast. It’s not far from my parents and it’s easier to be independent than staying with folk. Maybe we could work out a meeting somehow……

Haha I thought it was you ! I remembered you and your friend joining us. You had both been at St Pauls I believe. And you made me a beautiful green evening coat, down to the floor to go to a hospital ball. I went on to marry that chap n I became Heather Jonsberg . We lived in Aigburth for a few years. I left my nursing and had two children . But I worked as an auxiliary in a catholic hospital nearby, can’t remember it’s name. My goodness, that was an experience, run by nuns.
We moved to East Anglia. I then began my nurse training again! Quite different this time. So most of my nursing has been in East Anglia. Preferred surgery, always did. Did Midwifery too in Norwich. Best was Recovery nurse in Gt Yarmouth. Quite the challenge at times.
My daughters moved to Australia. My then X husband was in Brisbane. So at 57 I took the plunge and left Blightie. Been very hard to leave everything behind. However the Ozzy hubby of 5 years insists we return each year. My parents are still going strong.
We are booked in at Leasowe Castle for a couple of nights, it’s just up the road from where I lived as a child. Going back to Liverpool too. I loved those days. From hiding from sister in the sluice , walking those fabulous hospital corridors, watching the surgeons from that viewing room , I can’t remember how we got there but we snuck in and looked down on them.
I can remember faces but not names. We had an American girl with us , from Alabama I think.
Lovely that you saw my post. I had read yours earlier and wondered if it was you. Glad that you had a great career from it . Wish we had stayed in Liverpool .

I read your message board post with great interest.
My maiden name was O’Leary. I had been a Cadet Nurse for 18months and then completed my 18 months Ophthalmic Nursing Diploma at St Paul’s Eye Hospital.
Christine Cooper had also done her OND and was my friend.
We would have been part of your PTS’s from 1971.
I qualified SRN 1973..as having obtained my OND my SRN was 2yrs 5mths.
I too had a room on the top floor of the nursing home… not forgetting the pidgeons who entered left open windows!!
    I too remember Felicity…Greenham…
I last met up with her in Manchester 18yrs ago!!
I am still nursing full time… Have enjoyed a varied career…loved every moment of it and still as passionate about it as I was when I entered into the service nursing in 1967….

  117. Reply to Albert Hall

    Hello Albert
You are correct about the site of the third Infirmary – on Pembroke Place. The building is still there and in use by the University as you will have seen on our website. Have a look at the history section on our website for details about the three infirmaries.
There was also a Brownlow Hill Workhouse Infirmary 1772 to late 1920’s – demolished in 1931 and the site is now occupied by the Metrapolitan Cathedral.
Yes there was a maternity ward at the Pembroke Place site which opened 1926 and remained open until 1954 so maybe you were born there.

Has anybody information about the Liverpool Royal Infirmary? I believed that it was on the right hand side of Pembroke place just past the School of Tropical Medicine, but a number if items on line suggest that Brownlow Hill was the site. My mother always said that I was born there, and I was certainly an out.patient after hurting my right arm when I was a child. Any information welcome, but especially the approximate date of closure of the maternity services.

today Pat Holmes nee Rourke and myself, Josephine Humphries nee Whipple ct April 1960, attended the funeral of Brenda Hankin 31:05:1931 — 12:05:2017.
Brenda was working in Woolton when we were both training, as a tutor, after leaving the LRI, she went on to work on the District for 30 yrs.
Pat spotted the obituary in the echo on 19:05:2017 so we decided to attend a Brenda’s funeral, we both remembered her with gratitude an affection.
Her funeral was held at St. stephen’s church, Gateacre where she had been a loyal member of the congregation for many years and was remembered with affection by her friends there.
Brenda was secretary of the League in the time of people such as Sister Haynes and Joan Tolmon. I took over as league secretary when Brenda resigned shortly after her husbands death.
I’m sorry I do not know her maiden name, I hope this message reaches the present LRI league committee members.

  121. Jan 71 PTS

What a fabulous find for me, I didn’t realise your nurses league existed! Where have I been ? I was in the Jan 71 PTS. Reading all the posts evoked so many memories , most forgotten . I now live in Australia, but last year visited Liverpool for the first time in many years. I believed that the Royal had been pulled down but to my delight and amazement found out it was still standing by a chance conversation with a gentleman , both of us waiting for a ferry cross the Mersey. As soon as It docked I found a taxi to take me there. I can’t tell you how pleased I was. I was with my Australian husband who had come with me to do a nostalgic tour of my upbringing on the Wirral …..and spent the day in Liverpool. We got as far as the GP surgery at the front. I remember with great fondness the round wards, night duty, being in charge and being terrified, Sister Fox on nights. Am sure that was her name. Lots of memories have been prompted , my first ward, giving my first injection, my room on the top floor of the nursing home. Had to get used to sleeping with the sound of traffic most of the night. We are returning to Uk this December and will be revisiting Liverpool. I recall few names, am hopeless, but two in my set were Gill, she married Mike Bigg, a medical student and Felicity who married her boyfriend David Bain. My name was then Heather Darby.

  130. Who is "Muggins"?

In the mid- to late-1950s my late wife, Mary Shirley Hughes (see post below) was friendly with another LRI nursing student whom she always referred to as “Muggins”. Do you know the identity of “Muggins”? If so, please communicate with me or, alternatively, ask her to communicate with me. My email address is jehutson@shaw.ca
    Thank you.

  134. Pioneering Nurses

    Hi,
I am researching my Great Grandmothers family, and find that two “long lost cousins”, Fanny Maud and Clara Jane Cattell where nurses 1883-86 at the Brownlow Hill Infirmary. The girls’ were actually from Sheldon in Birmingham.

If anyone has any information on the Sisters or any of the people they may have worked with or nursed, I would be interested in seeing it.

I tried to respond to your post but it has bounced back from your email address.our nurses league started in 1933 so any information we have starts from then .We don’t hold any other data regarding training records and I think your best bet is to try the Liverpool Records Office. Good luck.

  138. Sad news

Sadly we have received news from Betty Hoare of the death of Rosemary Sweetnam ne Portersfield who commenced training with Betty in 1943. She lived in Northern Ireland and was coping with Parkinson’s disease. She was a lifetime member of the Nurses’ League and her daughter says she ‘treasured her Royal memories’.
Condolences from the League have been sent to her family.

  140. contact retired nurse

This is a real ‘shot in the dark’.

I’m trying to contact a retired colleague’s bridesmaid for a special birthday celebration. Her name was Maureen Dodd when she was bridesmaid to Emma Cobham in 1968.

Maureen trained at Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast, went to Basingstoke at some point and was believed to be working for the Royal College of Nursing before she retired.

Emma transferred from Belfast to the LRI during her training and qualified as an SRN at the Royal. She became a lecturer at JMU and is now retired.

We (family & friends) don’t want to spoil the surprise by asking Emma about Maureen so if anyone can help at all it would be fantastic.

  143. Mary Shirley Hughes

My late wife (nee Mary Shirley Hughes, 1 February 1936) of Mold, Flintshire, and I met in 1956, at a social function (I think it was a tea-dance) organized by the LRI nurses. As I was a junior medical student at the time I was pleasantly surprised that Shirley agreed to see me again! Shirley did six months of midwifery training at Guy’s Hospital, London, and returned to Liverpool where she joined the nursing staff at St Paul’s Eye Hospital and obtained an Ophthalmic Nursing Diploma. We married in 1961, in Mold, and shortly thereafter Shirley was appointed Ward Sister on the geriatric service at Victoria Central Hospital, Wallasey, the same hospital in which I did my houseman’s year.
I would appreciate receiving details of Shirley’s time at LRI and, in addition, would be happy to correspond with any one who might have known her in Mold, Liverpool or Wallasey.
I also have a couple of photographs of Shirley during her days at LRI that I’d be happy to share.
If you knew Shirley, please contact me: my email address is jehutson@shaw.ca
Sadly, Shirley died, in Barbados, in 1970.
    Thank you for your consideration.

Hi my name is Sheana Wilshaw ( formerly Evans). I would be interested in a reunion if there is one. When I started training I lived in Shotton North Wales. I’m sure I remember Sue Lovelady. Sarah Hughes was also in our group she was from Bangor North Wales. Sheila Camps( now Dawson) finished her training with us as she had a son. She was from Coed poeth Wrexham. I don’t know if this throws any light on things for anyone. You could try social media to try to trace people or even the TV. North West news for example.

  152. DLNH/RSH Re-Unions

To Sue Wantenaar, if your group trained with the United Liverpool Hospital training School any time after September 1969, which was planned that some did half the training at either the RSH or the DLNH then completed their training at LRI ( this was to help integrate everyone when the move came to transference to the new Hospital.
If you are hoping to arrange a re union with your group it might be a better plan to actually come to the Royal Infirmary Nurses League (held inOctober ) there are some members who trained under the United Liverpool Scheme I can think of Mrs Railton-Crowther who was at the Northern who is a member this may be a way forward for you. For as I have said before Mrs Parks mainly concentrates on those persons who trainined before 1969
Or email us on the ‘contact us’ if you want to try to contact someone who may be a member.

    Best Wishes

  188. nurse training in 1950s

    Hello

My name is Carol Wilkinson . I am looking for information about my mother Cerries Wilde who I think trained at the Royal Infirmary around 1948 to 1952. I know she said that she had to leave when she got married as only unmarried nurses were allowed in the training school.

I would love to hear from anyone who remembers her or anyone who can tell me what life was like for trainee nurses in the 1950s.

My mother died in 1993 and although she did not continue her nursing career she went on to train as a teacher and became head of a nursery school in the Wirral

Sadly, we have been informed of the death of Lesley Robertson, former Chief Nursing Officer of LRI and then RLH. Lesley led the commissioning team for the move to RLH in 1978 and those of us who trained from the mid 1960’s until 1985 will remember her with fondness as an approachable and efficient leader. She later worked in Saudi Arabia, and retired to live in South Africa, still keeping in touch with many of her old colleagues.
There will be a memorial service in the chapel of RLH in September, news of this will be posted on the message board for our members.

He may have been a member of the Royal College of Nursing but I have no idea if they keep records.Good Luck.

Found this site whilst looking for general information on hospitals in Liverpool I had my medical and interview in October 1978 before stating my training in May 1979 . By then it was the new Royal ,I did however live in the nurses home situated in the infirmary ,my window view being one of the round wards. It was quite spooky at times as the hospital was empty except for the security team we had to pass at the entrance to get to the side door for the home. sharon.owens@lwh.nhs.uk

  278. Matron Tryers

I was truly saddened to hear of Sister Tryers passing. She was a force to be reckoned with on both day and night duty. I remember when we would be having the morning report if Miss Tryers came in we all had to stand as she entered the office. It was about respect and she was very respected. I had a bad end of ward report when I was training, she called me into the office and said I know this is not like you. She listened to my problem, told me to leave it with her and the next day I received a glowing report off the ward sister. I never knew what had been said to change her mind but Miss Tryers thought I was worth it. Mary was in my P.T.S. April 1959, I’m so sorry to hear of her passing. Could you please pass on my condolences to her sister Flo Blundell. I have been trying to get in touch with fellow students, and I wonder if Flo might know if Mary had been in touch with any of our set. If Flo does know, would she be kind enough to get in touch with me, I would be so great full.

  287. PTS 1971

I trained at the LRI 1971-73 as a SRN.
I had previously trained at St Paul’s Eye Hospital and obtained an Ophthalmic Nursing Diploma.
I am still working full time.
I would like to hear from you if you were in my sets.
    Susan.

(Hi Susan Thanks for getting in touch. I hope someone replies to you.

Susan contacted us in 2013, looking for members of her set then so if you remember Susan, please leave her a message. In 2013, Susan told us a little bit about herself. She became a Cadet Nurse at Ormskirk in 1967, going on to do her Ophthalmic Diploma at St Pauls before starting her SRN at the LRI. Susan has worked in the NHS, Military, Ministry of Defence and the private sector. Pat)
