Information

In 1999 it was decided by the Liverpool Nurses League Committee to set up two Awards and a Bursary. University of Liverpool School of Health Sciences were providing the Nursing BA (Hons) degree course and they agreed to incorporate the awards into their administration.

The Awards were:-

The MARY JONES AWARD of £100 which was to be awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark at the end of First Year of BA(Hons) Nursing Degree course.

The REBECCA HAYNES AWARD of £100 was to be awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark at the end of the Final Year of BA(Hons) Nursing Degree course

THE BURSARY was originally for £1000 and the aim was for the recipient to carry out a research project. This changed in 2003 and became the Travel Award and the funding was increased to £1500 in 2011. This is awarded bi-annually and reports are published in the League Journal.

The Kate Russell Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice of a Second year Degree student.

This is actually not funded by the Nurses League but we usually present the award at the graduation party in the Whelan Building on graduation day. Kate Russell (formerly Morle nee Arthan) was the first Professor of Nursing in Liverpool and the current President of the Nurses League at her untimely death. Her significant contribution to Nursing was recognised by this award in 2012, initiated by her husband, Tony Russell, and continued by the Department of Health Sciences.
