We had a marvellous day last Wednesday 13th Jan when members of the committee past and present attended the 2nd awards ceremony. It was the second attempt to organise the ceremony as the first date was cancelled due to the doctors strike. We felt for Jo Marinas having to reorganise and it so nearly happened again as they were on strike the day before on 12th January. As reported previously Lisa Grant, Chief Nurse, has introduced this programme to demonstrate competencies and award a hospital badge on its completion. It ties in with validating registration as required by the N& M Council but her main aim is to foster pride in belonging to the hospital ,such as we had in our hospital badge. In recognition of our contribution to Nursing in the past we were presented with Honorary Badges. All the great and good were there and again there was much enthusiasm for the programme by the staff which was very encouraging. Carolyn and Mary Newton were asked to give an inspirational presentation which they did beautifully with some great photos to illustrate nurse training in the past, they did us proud! There was a special award for Mary Harrison for her inspiration and dedication to nursing .Some of us who had worked at the Royal recently enjoyed meeting up with current staff and as you can imagine lots of laughter and happy smiles. It was a surprisingly emotional experience on being presented with the badge. I personally felt very humbled and privileged to be included in the wonderful history Liverpool Nurses have contributed to our profession. It made me stop and reflect on the girl I was then and the woman I became because of the influences of my career. The staff were so positive about their jobs admitting all the difficulties in todays NHS but it was very encouraging to find so many with the same feelings about nursing that we shared all those years ago.
