Another successful reunion took place on September 17th at the Foresight Centre on the site of the old LRI. Over one hundred members attended and we started off in the old chapel where Carolyn addressed the members and we had a terrific presentation by Meg Parkes on her recently published book Captive Memories. This has been produced in collaboration with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as her Masters degree and co -authored with Geoff Hill. It was a fascinating presentation covering the experiences of Far Eastern prisoners of war in WW11 and the ongoing relationship with the school of Tropical Medicine in caring for the many physical and mental effects following their imprisonment. There were many comments later from members on how interesting they found her, some had nursed on Tropics at the LRI so had memories of their own . Meg is still interested in talking to anyone who can add to the portfolio of information she has collated. She had a few books for sale but took orders for others so was very pleased. We had a raffle for a copy of the book which was won by Mary Howe.If you want to order the book the ISBN-10: 1910837008 , ISBN-13: 978-1910837009 should enable you.
We were very sorry to lose Moira Sargent from the Committee after functioning so well in her role of Membership Secretary and also producing the Members Journal previously amongst other roles. Many of you will have been obliged to Moira for her help and support over the years and Carolyn thanked her on behalf of us all and she was given a bouquet of flowers in appreciation.
Afternoon tea followed with some groups celebrating 40 and 50 years and enjoying the company of friends who had travelled from far flung places for the first time in many years. Lots of photos to see in the reunion section.I have not labelled them as it is so difficult to identify so many people but I hope you enjoy seeing them.
Some members had been on a tour of the LRI earlier in the day which seemed to go well but it is becoming increasingly difficult to see anything in the original state as the success of its conversion to education suites and offices continues.the next reunion is on 15th October 2016 so put it in your diaries!
