2013 is the 200th anniversary since Jane Austin wrote Pride and Prejudice.
We featured a photo in our 2008 photo book showing the cast of a production of the above at the LRI in 1944. Since then I discovered a cutting from the Liverpool Daily Post of that time.
The date of the production was Saturday September 23rd 1944. The venue was the University Students Union.
“The production (a version by Helen Jerome) was presented by the Liverpool Royal Infirmary Unit of the Royal College of Nursing, Student Nurses` Association in aid of the Field Ambulance Fund.
The play was produced by Miss Pillars S.R.N; assisted by Miss Phillips S.R.N. the chairman of the unit. Miss Julian, the stage manager was assisted on the night by the stage manager of the University Dramatic Society.
The chairman of the hospital, Colonal Sir John Shute, the president of the Guild of Undergraduates and members of the honorary staff were amongst the crowded audience, which also included Service patients.
Some of the most effective scenery was specially made for the production by a former patient and the costumes procured from many sources. Some were originals.
The audience were enthusiastic and the play was pronounced a great success.”
