Nursing Standard Review

Our photo book, published in 2008, was reviewed earlier this year by the Nursing Standard.

Liverpool Royal Infirmary Nurses` Training School – Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Nurses League

With a few exceptions, nurses` voices and presence are often absent from the history of health care. This little book goes some way towards the development of an historical nursing canon and will delight those interested in nursing history.

It consists of a series of more than 100 photographs that illustrate the history of Liverpool Royal Infirmary and, in particular, the work and lives of nurses and the Nurses` League. The photographs date from the late 19th century to the present day and offer fascinating insights into those whose lives revolved around the hospital. Although the hospital surroundings look stark, these invaluable photographs show that nurses had significant status in this institution.

The photographs I enjoyed most were of the nurses` home, sisters` dining room, nurses` sitting room and library and recreational activities such as the Christmas play, carol singing, the tennis tournament and award ceremonies.

I would have loved more commentary, but this book is easily worth £8.00 of anyone`s money.
